Take Action: Demand Arctic Drilling be Stopped

The current administration recently published a "call for nominations" on parcels of the Arctic Wildlife Refuge that could be offered for lease to oil and gas companies for further drilling. As Franciscans who care for all of God’s Creation, we must advocate on behalf of the wildlife and indigenous people who call that area home.

Subject: Stop Drilling and Protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!

Message:

I am a person of faith affiliated with the Franciscan Action Network and I strongly oppose the plans to allow oil and gas companies to exploit and spoil the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge has supported Alaska Native communities for millennia and is home to polar bears, caribou, and many other unique species. Drilling for oil here would be a disaster for people, wildlife and our climate. Pope Francis encourages all faithful to trust in science and the science on this issue is clear. We must phase out fossil fuels if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. And we need to protect wild lands like the Arctic Refuge to give communities and wildlife a chance to adapt and thrive. The Arctic is already experiencing the impacts of a rapidly changing climate — the region is warming faster than the rest of the world, and the sea-ice is melting with devastating consequences for the communities that depend on Arctic lands and waters for their way of life. I urge you not to allow oil and gas lease sales in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Peace and All Good.
