Franciscan Action Network: A Call to Protect Children in Crisis

As people of faith who follow the example of St. Francis, we are compelled to respond whenever human dignity is threatened. Thousands of unaccompanied children, already carrying the trauma of displacement and migration, are now being stripped of one of the few safeguards they have: access to legal representation. A recent federal decision has effectively dismantled legal support for tens of thousands of young people navigating the immigration system alone. Infants, toddlers, and teens are now being placed into courtrooms—without advocates, without protection, and without anyone by their side.

Franciscans believe in compassion over cruelty, accompaniment over abandonment. We cannot allow children to face complex legal proceedings with no understanding of their rights and no one to speak for them.

We urge Congress to act immediately to restore the legal services that have been cut.

Let us remember: how we treat the stranger, especially the smallest among us, is how we treat Christ himself.
