Support Peacebuilding in Ukraine
As your constituent and a person of faith affiliated with the Franciscan Action Network, I strongly urge you to speak publicly and to support promoting diplomatic negotiations and other proven peacebuilding practices.
The catastrophic war in Ukraine continues to escalate and we need your help to end the war and lean us into a just peace.
Pope Francis invites us to "touch the wounded flesh of victims."
"Let us look at all those civilians whose killing was considered 'collateral damage.' Let us ask the victims themselves. Let us think of the refugees and displaced…the mothers who lost their children, and the boys and girls maimed or deprived of their childhood. Let us hear the true stories…look at reality through their eyes…In this way, we will be able to grasp the abyss of evil at the heart of war. Nor will it trouble us to be deemed naive for choosing peace" (Fratelli Tutti).
There have been at least 8 million Ukrainian refugees, 7 million internally displaced persons, nearly 9000 civilians killed, at least 500 children killed and a traumatized generation, as well as hundreds of thousands of soldiers killed from both sides, increased domestic violence in Ukraine, with a significant ramping up of militarization in Europe and untold ecological damage to our common home. No one wins with these dynamics. And, they take us further away from a just peace.
Pope Francis, along with a number of other key countries have been advocating for diplomatic negotiations. There are also proven peacebuilding and nonviolent resistance practices that are occurring and desperately need to be scaled-up. These include trauma-mitigation, restorative dialogues, nonviolent non-cooperation in occupied territories and in Russia, and unarmed civilian protection of vulnerable persons, such as through the Nonviolent Peaceforce.
Once again, I urge you to speak publicly and support promoting diplomatic negotiations and other proven peacebuilding practices. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
