The Endangered Species Act (ESA) protects biodiversity and prevents the extinction of our most vulnerable animals, fish, and plants.

The ESA Amendments Act (H.R. 1897), currently under consideration by the House of Representatives, would gut the ESA and put species with rapidly declining populations at even greater risk. Nearly all species listed under the ESA have been saved from extinction and hundreds are on the path to recovery today.

Message:

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is our very best tool for stopping the extinction crisis in its tracks, and I am writing to oppose any effort by this Congress to weaken the ESA. As a Christian, I believe all of God's creatures are sacred. Every living thing plays an important role in maintaining the health and beauty of our common home. However, legislative attacks on the ESA, like H.R. 1897 — the ESA Amendments Act — would make drastic changes that weaken the ESA, including delaying timelines for listing unprotected species while accelerating timelines to delist currently protected species. For that reason and more, I encourage you to vote against H.R. 1897 and any other bill that undermines the ESA. In Ladauto Si’ (2015), Pope Francis instructed: “Because of us, thousands of species will no longer give glory to God by their very existence, nor convey their message to us. We have no such right.” In the coming decades, a million of the Earth’s species face the possibility of extinction due to human-caused habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. We have no such right! Even species that are not yet on the brink will likely face huge population declines. Please do not stand by as this extinction crisis means fewer and fewer pollinators to support our crops and national food supply, depleted fisheries, and threats to America’s remarkable wild places like rivers, wetlands, coral reefs, and forests. The Endangered Species Act is effective in protecting species and enjoys broad public support. I am a steadfast defender of the law and its full implementation for the recovery of imperiled wildlife. I ask you as my elected representative to defend the ESA and reject any amendments that would undermine its effectiveness.
