On Monday, October 16, participants in the Franciscan Justice Leadership Conference are heading to Congress! We need your help to support our efforts to tell our members of Congress to cosponsor the following environmental justice legislation.

The Environmental Justice for All Act is rooted in the moral principle that all people have the right to pure air, clean water, and a healthful environment. It requires consideration of cumulative impacts in permitting decisions and ensures that permits will not be issued if the project cannot demonstrate a reasonable certainty of no cumulative harm to human health. It amends the Civil Rights Act to allow lawsuits for disparate impacts of industrial pollution.

The Farm Bill is a package of legislation that is passed once every five years. One specific part of the Farm Bill, the Justice for Black Farmers Act of 2023 (marker S. 96, H.R. 1167), will create a U.S.D.A. civil rights oversight board, provide debt relief for Black farmers, and create a land grant program to encourage a new generation of Black farmers.

Cosponsor legislation for the Environment

These are critical pieces of legislation which ensure not only equitable access to nutrition but also the unalienable human right to clean air, water, and a healthful environment.

The Environmental Justice for All Act is rooted in the moral principle that all people have the right to pure air, clean water, and a healthful environment. It requires consideration of cumulative impacts in permitting decisions and ensures that permits will not be issued if the project cannot demonstrate a reasonable certainty of no harm to human health. It amends the Civil Rights Act to allow lawsuits for disparate impacts of industrial pollution.

The Justice for Black Farmers Act of 2023 is a specific part of the Farm Bill, which will create a USDA civil rights oversight board, provide debt relief for Black farmers, and create a land grant program to encourage a new generation of Black farmers. This Act addresses the history of discrimination in federal policy and protects the 50,000 remaining Black farmers from losing their land.
