Urge Congress: Protect Clean Energy!

The clean energy tax credits passed under the historic Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) (P.L. 117-169) represented the world’s largest investment in countering the climate crisis. FAN celebrates the role the Franciscan-hearted played in its landmark passage in 2022.

Thanks to the IRA, we are closer than ever to halving U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reaching our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 (2015 International Paris Agreement). In addition to helping us meet our nation’s climate goals, the IRA has spurred the creation of over 400,000 jobs in the clean energy economy.

Despite the historic bipartisan support for clean energy tax credits and the historic numbers of jobs created in these new industries, the IRA faces the threat of repeal. Recent research shows that repealing these credits would:

increase electricity bills by 10% on average;
cost 97,000 jobs; and
end over $300 billion in investments nationwide.

FAN also works to protect funding for critical programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, Social Security, migrant services, and other essential services in the U.S. government’s budget and appropriations process.

As a member of the Franciscan Action Network, I urge you to protect the tax credits that have created American clean energy jobs and investments in the upcoming budget reconciliation bill. Recent research has shown the threats to the U.S. economy posed by repealing these clean energy tax credits, including: - $336 billion less investment in America over the next 15 years; - 97,000 fewer American energy jobs; and - an average 10% increase in our electricity bills, while 34% of American households already report struggling to afford their power bills. Many of our neighbors are already struggling with surging bills, increased grocery prices, and unaffordable housing. Repealing these clean energy tax credits will only make this situation worse by increasing energy costs, driving more inflation. We urge you to oppose the repeal of these clean energy investments, protect American jobs, and reduce our energy bills. Thank you for prioritizing the stewardship of our environment and our economy.
